śrī-śukaḥ uvāca — Śrī Śukadeva Gosvāmī said; aḿśumān — the king named Aḿśumān; ca — also; tapaḥ tepe — executed austerity; gańgā — the Ganges; ānayana-kāmyayā — with a desire to bring the Ganges to this material world to deliver his forefathers; kālam — time; mahāntam — for a long duration; na — not; aśaknot — was successful; tataḥ — thereafter; kālena — in due course of time; saḿsthitaḥ — died.
Śukadeva Gosvāmī continued: King Aḿśumān, like his grandfather, performed austerities for a very long time. Nonetheless, he could not bring the Ganges to this material world, and thereafter, in due course of time, he died.
